My professional journey in nursing

My journey in nursing has been shaped by a strong commitment to patient care, continuous learning, adaptability, and service. From my early experience providing direct patient support in the Philippines to my current role as a Registered Nurse caring for high-acuity patients in a Stepdown Unit, each stage of my career has helped me grow both professionally and personally.

Where It Began

My nursing journey began in the Philippines, where I worked as a Nursing Attendant in an outpatient department. This early experience gave me a strong foundation in patient care, vital signs monitoring, documentation, patient comfort, and collaboration with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals. It was during this time that I developed my appreciation for the importance of compassionate, safe, and respectful patient care.

Growing Through Patient Support and Healthcare Leadership

As my career progressed, I moved into patient-support and healthcare operations roles. I worked with patients, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical partners, pharmacies, and other healthcare stakeholders to support treatment access, patient education, medication adherence, and continuity of care.

These experiences expanded my understanding of healthcare beyond the bedside. I learned how important communication, coordination, education, confidentiality, and advocacy are in helping patients successfully navigate their healthcare journey.

I also gained leadership and operational experience through staff training, quality assurance, program management, and coordination of healthcare services. These roles strengthened my organizational skills and taught me how to work effectively with diverse teams while keeping patient needs at the center of my work.

Returning to the Bedside

After years of working in healthcare operations and patient-support services, returning to direct patient care as a Registered Nurse was a meaningful milestone in my professional journey.

Today, as a critical care nurse at NYCHHC hospital, I care for high-acuity patients, including those who are ventilator-dependent and those experiencing cardiac conditions, stroke, sepsis, respiratory compromise, and post-ICU recovery. My role has strengthened my clinical judgment, assessment skills, telemetry monitoring, medication administration, IV therapy, documentation, and ability to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.

What My Journey Has Taught Me

My career has taught me that nursing is more than clinical knowledge. It is about seeing the whole person, listening to patients and families, communicating effectively, recognizing changes in a patient's condition, advocating for safe care, and working together with the healthcare team.

My diverse background has also taught me to be adaptable. Having worked in direct patient care, patient education, healthcare operations, and acute-care nursing, I bring a broader perspective to my practice. I understand both the patient's experience and the importance of the systems and teams working behind the scenes to support quality care.

Where I Am Going

As I continue my nursing career, my goal is to keep developing my clinical knowledge and skills while remaining grounded in compassion, patient advocacy, and safe, evidence-based care.

I am proud of the path that brought me to where I am today. Every role, challenge, and transition has contributed to the nurse I am becoming—and I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the patients I care for.
